In 2020, the year in which the Covid-19 pandemic began, households accounted for 27% of final energy consumption in the European Union (EU), according to figures released by Eurostat.

‘Most of the EU's final household energy consumption is covered by natural gas (31.7%) and electricity (24.8%),’ reads the report by the European statistics office.

Renewable energies accounted for 20.3%, followed by oil and oil products (12.3%).

A small proportion (2.7%), says Eurostat, is still covered by coal products (solid fuels).

The data also shows that, in the EU, the main use of energy by households is to heat their homes (62.8% of final energy consumption in the residential sector).
